VISITS

"A

WOMAN'S

PLACE

Each weekday morning at 10:20, twenty or so students descend upon room 237 at Cleveland Heights High School to examine the varied aspects of women in society in Ms. Liz Russo's innovative class, A Woman's Place.

I took this course because I'm interested in Women's Lib. I am getting a lot more than I thought I would. It gets me thinking about what's going on about the movement. And what to look for in my culture that shows I'm not being allowed to be equal.

What She Wants first heard about the class through a letter in which one of the students described the class topics: dealing with the identity crisis of women as a group; the history of the women's liberation movement; and noteworthy contributions by women to the fields of art, music, literature, politics and science. Throughout the course, the concepts of maleness and femaleness are critiqued.

I come from a large family, I have 5 sisters and 3 brothers. Three of my sisters are married and have kids. I'm an aunt of 11. I took this course because I want to do more than become a housewife and mother. I love kids and cooking and cleaning but I'd really like to be able to go out and get a good job-to have a career. I thought it would be interesting to veiw some of the women of the past who really went out and did things. I don't know any famous women artists or musicians. I always hear alot about Rembrant, Renoir, Picasso, Mozart, Beethoven -but in all the books I've read I haven't come across any famous woman-especially in this field. I was also curious to see how the movement started and how the male became so dominant.

I think my parents have raised us all equally, In my Mother's day it was impossible for a woman to become anything but a wife-I think she would like to see rne or one of my sisters establish a career and perhaps fulfill her dreams of a long time ago ( wellnot too long ago, sorry Mom).

The format of the course includes lectures, outside speakers, readings, debates, role playing, films and panel discussions. Two members of the What She Wants staff were invited to be guest speakers on the subjects of Women's Liberation and opportunities to join in the movement here in Cleveland. Other people with ideas to contribute or who would like to start similar classes elsewhere are invited to contact the teacher, Ms. Liz Russo at 382-9200.

When I signed up for "Women's Place" I thought it would be a pro-women's lib course really strongly pushed. But I said, how could you be against something which you don't know anything about except what the press slants it to be. Well the course is not pushing women's lib but instead of learning about men we put women in. When I look at articles / looked at 3 months ago I am more aware of discrimination.

"Among the most successful workshops held during the In-Service Days of the Cleve. Hts. Univ. Hts, school system were the two on sexism. We had many compliments, "said Lana Moresky of NOW and the Committee On Sexism in Education. In total 60 teachers, Elementary through Senior High School level, attended the two workshops.

A slide show entitled "Sexism in the ScottForeskin Primary Readers" was shown in the Curriculum Workshop. The group then examined math, science, and social studies books used by the school system. Committee members explained how stories could be retold to eliminate sexism.

In the Counseling Workshop, teachers filled out a questionnaire concerning myths

and facts about working women, "to point out how teachers were often not realistic in teaching girls about the future," noted Ms. Moresky.

Carol lorillo prepared an d presented a "time -span" to show how many years women work in their lifetime. Another questionnaire was then filled out to reveal attitudes about women in general.

A movie, "Anything You Want To Be," was shown, and afterward the workshop broke up into small groups to discuss the movie and to further go over the questionnaires.

"We are also starting consciousness-raising groups among the students in the Junior and Senior High Schools" said Ms. Moresky, "and, a Task Force on Sexism is now form. ing in the school system under the jurisdiction of the administration."
